On checking my on-line banking this morning I see that I have just
received my old gimmer's winter fuel payment of 250 quid.

Perfectly in time to pay for the whizzo stainless steel cat to back
exhaust I had fitted to the MX5 yesterday.

Do I feel guilty about receiving a universal, not means tested benefit?

No more than I do when I use my shiny new National Buss Concession pass,
which saves me a minimum of 15 quid a week.

Yep, just dropped left into a slightly more
minor road from a slightly faster one only
to nearly be knocked flying by some old
duffer to whom the lighting-up laws seem
not to apply by dint of he was only pulling
the car out of his driveway to park by the
road side and not off out for a drive. This
is in spite of it still being half-light and all
the street lights being on.

I will grant that there was a van parked up
the road from him and that thus he could
not see me coming.

But if he'd had his lights on then I would
have seen them on the road surface. Or
maybe he wouldn't've seen mine. Not that
he did anyway.

I shall remember to give his drive a wide
berth from now on. It is quite close to the
junction in question so perhaps he's not
used to living in his house. Looked like I
nearly triggered palpitations in him from
his face.

But seeing as I reckon his logic was that
"I don't need to put my lights on because
there''ll be nobody about" and the M-Way
junctions really aren't too far from there I
should guess he's been retired a while.

DSA 50 kM/h (emergency stop on test) debacle

Yeah, I got to hear about this one and
was surprised how many other people
had too.

Here is a considered opinion which, as
I have detected some knee-jerk abuse
from one or two regulars here, you may
like to compare with your own thinking,
or "thinking" respectively.

Firstly, presumably the current 50kM/h
EU stipulation applies to car and HGV
tests as well as to bikes. Yet there is
no talk of abandoning all tests. So are
there technicalities or loopholes cagies
are exploiting which haven't filtered down
to the bike examiners?

Otherwise, I thought the idea of speed
cameras and pursuit logging was for
consistent speed to monitored over a
given distance--to allow for any number
of circumstances in which velocity may
creep up. Traditionally this was in the
form of a measured mile. And even then
you were allowed about 10%, as per the
general rule-of-thumb which applies to
most weights and measures in the UK.

If so then, erm, how is there any kind
of a problem? Given the use of headsets
to give instructions surely people can
be told to nudge it up to 50 kM/h in a
state of readiness to pull the stop. Or
is it just that under the new test you're
given no warning but are just told ayt
the start of the test that at some point
you will be yelled at to "STOP!" and at
this time you must?

Otherwise a bike with a speedo scored
in American miles should be fine with
UK imperial measures if the scales on
them are converted by way of a lookup
table. The speedo will read 50 kM/h
but actually the rider will only be doing
29 MPH!

Surely any kind of grey import from the
US market would permit this so sales
of the "My First..." genre capacities of
"...Harley", "...Buell" or "...Indian" need
not be a pre-requisite for training schools
or test centres who prefer not to be tied
quite so specifically to given marques.

Otherwise it sounds like perhaps when
our astronomers get round to naming
the planets in the solar system which
made the news last week "DSA" and
"ACPO" might not be bad choices for
any earth-like ones.

I see no reason for the whole test system
to grind to a halt and can only hope it
is a temporary bureaucratic insanity
that will pass under the scrutiny of
anyone with half a brain cell.

Surely we can just take the 10% allowed
already under law by the Police and their
speed cameras and, thus, 50kM/h is
actually a band between 45-55 kM/h?

from where I used to live. I haven't seen it in person for about 35

... of simple pleasures. To sit on a comfy sofa, slugging a
very pleasant and remarkably cheap cider (cheers, wessie ;-)) while
leafing through a good book - and listening to an hour-long special on
Planet Rock, dissecting Queen's Night At The Opera. It still sounds
good, especially at a volume sensible to my UST ears and (go ****
yourselves, stereophiles) in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

I was right there, I tell you. Life is good.

Wonder if one of you chaps could do me a favour and measure your
dipstick?

From the bottom of the cap to the top and bottom notches IYSWIM

I've got a Luftmeister oil temp thingy and the markings on it are not
the same as the ones on the original dipstick. I know where the original
dipstick is, it's in the shrink-wrap packaging that the Luftmeister
thingy came in.

Where that is is beyond me :-(

I'm planning on scribing new marks in as that will guarantee I find the
original immediately :-)

No hurry though, don't go out in the cold or anything - I'll not be
changing the oil for some time. I just thought I'd ask while I
remembered

In about 1 hour, I'm leaving work early to pick up the family and jump
a plane for Las Vegas for the final round of Endurocross (my 50th
birthday present). Yeah baby!!
Anyone else going to be there? I'll be wandering around Friday in my
stylin' "Will Wheelie for Food" T-shirt, and Saturday I should be
sporting the world famous "Forget the whales, save the 2 stroke"
shirt. If you see me, stop me and say "Hi!".
A report will be forthcoming. This is gonna be SO cool.

Daniel Greaves, 20, was in collision with a car on 3rd November.

Taken to Norfolk & Norwich, transferred to Addenbrooke's.

Life-support turned-off 15th November.

He always carried a donor card.

I knew Danny quite well and know the driver of the car.
